- Birthplace: California, USA
My name is Cassandra Yu, and I am a freshman at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California. I enjoy playing badminton, hanging out with friends, and trying new things. I have lived in Fremont my whole life, which has given me a chance to be apart of a technologically booming and progressive area. Being born into a financially stable family, I am lucky enough to have food, water, and a comfortable home. This has given me the opportunity to pursue my passions such as badminton and prepare myself for a successful future.
I first heard about the program Viet Dreams through my friend Allison Lee who I play badminton with and also works with this program. She gave me the Timeless Vietnam photo book and told me a little about her work with the program. After looking through the beautiful photos, I was fascinated by the culture and was inspired to get involved to help make a difference. Living in an affluent area full of opportunities, it’s easy to get caught up in small problems, and people rarely stop to consider how privileged they really are. I have always been interested in helping others, and through this program, I hope to make a difference in the lives of children and families in Vietnam.
I plan to raise money for schools so that they can afford a new water filter system to ensure that the children have access to safe and clean water. I’m also hoping to join my friend and her family in visiting Vietnam to personally experience the problems people in these communities face. I am looking forward to getting to know people in the communities I visit and hearing their stories while sharing my own. I hope that the work I do will inspire others to help out as well. With the support of my family and friends, I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to follow my dreams, and I truly believe that “every kid deserves to dream big.”
